5 activities to do with children in September

Beautiful Autumn trees with yellow, brown and green leaves. A river is flowing through it.

Here’s the first in a new series where I’ll be sharing 5 seasonal activities that you can do with your children each month, starting off with activities to do with children in September. First up, it’s back-to-school month and in our family, we will be keeping plans low-key. My daughter will be going into year 1 and after almost 7 weeks off for the summer holidays it’s going to be an adjustment.

So, without further ado, here are 5 activities to do with children in September…

1. Adventure walk

September is a beautiful month with the start of Autumn and usually mild temperatures. I adore an Autumn walk so this had to be on the list for September. Plan an adventure weekend walk to explore nature trails or local parks. You could even make it into a scavenger hunt with a list of items for them to find. We find this works really well for keeping our girls engaged and not moaning about walking after 10 minutes(!).

2. Nature art

Go outside and gather lots of different nature items – think fallen leaves, twigs, and pine cones. You can then use these items to create beautiful art pieces. A leaf collage is a great idea, especially with the ever-changing coloured leaves and it will work for every age. You could also collect rocks and pebbles and then set up a space to paint them. There are so many great tutorials online for transforming them into animals but you can also just enjoy painting them and going wild!

3. Set up a cosy reading nook

September is the start of a new school year so it’s a great time to encourage reading at home and cultivate a love for books. Children love a den, and so creating a special reading nook can transform reading into a fun adventure. Let your children help create and decorate the space, filling it with cushions and throws and then fill it with books for you all to dive into. Maybe add some hot chocolate to the fun too.

4. Make a bird feeder

This is such a nice activity and is a great way to encourage creativity, but also to introduce them to the wonderful wildlife on our doorstep. You can talk about local birds and the importance of providing food for them. There are lots of great bird feeder ideas online so you’ll have plenty of choice, but using pine cones as a basis is a good idea as you can go out on a walk first to gather them.

5. Do some harvest-themed baking

September is a great month to get in the kitchen and make some seasonal recipes, from soup to apple crisps and pumpkin muffins. I love baking and so baking with my children is one of my favourite activities (although I do struggle with the mess!). Soup is an easy meal for them to get involved in making as they can help cut up vegetables like carrots and potatoes and add it all to a pan. Even better if you can source some of the ingredients from your garden!
