5th Birthday Party Ideas for a Village Hall party

This August my daughter turned 5 and this year she was all about having a birthday party with lots of her friends – preferably with a bouncy castle and a visit from Elsa and Anna. I thought it would be useful to share some 5th birthday party ideas in case you’re in need of some inspiration. Photos are limited as it was all a bit chaotic before the party and all of the photos I do have, have children in, but I hope it is useful regardless!

The venue

We debated holding the party at home but the decision was made for us after realising that her preferred bouncy castle wouldn’t fit in the garden. A village hall it was. Village halls are a great option for a birthday party – they have reasonable rates (ours was £16ph) and have so many great facilities. The village hall we used had a playpark, a big field, lots of tables and chairs and everything you could need in the kitchen. It took away a lot of stress knowing that the venue was sound!

We booked the village hall for four hours, with two hours for the party and then an hour on either side for set-up and cleaning up.

Decorations

There’s not a huge amount you can do in a village hall with limited time but we went with a Frozen theme to decorate the hall. I ordered a pack of 60 Frozen-themed balloons which we tied up around the room. We also left a few on the floor to be played with as 5-year-olds adore a balloon! I also bought two packs of light blue foil curtains which were so easy to put up and come in lots of different colours. This worked so well behind the cake table and made a real feature of it. I spent a minimal amount on decorations but it worked well. When in doubt, balloons!

Entertainment

We hired a disco-themed bouncy castle with a slide from Meg-A-Bounce who I can highly recommend if you’re local to Lincoln. I spoke to a number of bouncy castle companies and they were so friendly and answered my many questions. Everything was seamless and I will definitely use them again. A bouncy castle is always a hit and the children loved it. Book in advance if you can though as we booked a couple of months ahead but our number one option (a Frozen themed castle) had already been taken.

We also hired Elsa and Anna via Katie’s Characters who were also fantastic. We went for their 30-minute meet-and-greet option which worked perfectly as it broke up the party and was the perfect length of time to hold their attention. My daughter was made to feel so special.

We had some back-up entertainment such as games and a dressing-up box but none of these were needed as the children spent so much time on the bouncy castle and in the village hall play park.

Lunch

We arranged the tables in a horseshoe shape so all of the children could face each other. This felt much more social than having one long length of tables.

I decided to put together individual lunch boxes for the children, ordering a pack of snowflake themed boxes which worked really well with the Frozen theme. Their boxes included:

  • Three finger sandwiches – I made these all vegetarian
  • Pack of mini cheddars
  • Small box of raisins
  • Frubes style yogurt
  • Iced gems (I avoided chocolate because…mess!)

I had asked for dietary requirements beforehand and made sure I did separate boxes for anyone with special requests. We had three younger children and so I adapted the boxes to suit them too.

Cake

Our beautiful Frozen-themed birthday cake was made by my friend and turned out beautifully. I found the personalised Frozen birthday cake topper on Etsy and the figurines came from a Frozen Busy Book that I had at home.

Party bags

I didn’t want to go overboard with the party bags and so kept it simple with these four items, plus a slice of cake.

I hope this post has given you some good 5th birthday party ideas. Now, to start planning the next one…!
